if vampire weekend is "punk", let alone the "most punk band of 2008", then up is black and white is east.
i see what you're doing here, prefix, and i even appreciate it to an extent because it's an interesting point you're making that being preppy is now somehow come full circle to the point that it's somehow rebellious, that prep is the new punk, that paul simon is the new husker du, that vampire weekend is the new nirvana. that's all very well and good, except for the part where it doesn't make any fucking sense.
i mean...okay, i AM one of those people who wants to hate vampire weekend but can't. they write good songs. but a band taking themselves seriously even though they write good pop music and not sad bastard folk or black metal or grunge or whatever is one thing. but making them out to be on the level of, say, the replacements or (insert your favorite punk music here) simply because they aren't ashamed of their image or their influences doesn't make any sense to me. U2 isn't embarrassed by the fact that they make millions off of sappy, super-processed stadium-rock. does that make them boundary-pushing rebels? i should get off my high horse. this article just sort of rubbed me the wrong way.
