i've been a little bit obsessed with this set of remix/mash-ups that i found on soundcloud the other day. all of it's pretty much great - the guy has a great ear (?) for this stuff. if you're in a hurry, though, just check out "a gentle hell" (a trippy version of wilco's "hell is chrome" mashed with thievery corporation), "just break" (jurassic 5 and radiohead), and best of all "freezerflowerfluff" (phish's "tweezer" and "fluffhead" mashed with the dead's "china cat sunflower").

though my hunt for an easy website design tool and time to make an AWESOME personal/professional website continue to fall through (it's been what, 2 years now?), i've finally found a convenient and non-stupid way to re-up all of my old sessions and records for download.

mint medley session available for free download and consumption!
so in defiance of my coming exams, i found myself staying home saturday afternoon and setting up a recording space in my bathroom. i'd been toying with the idea of using the bathroom to record any guitar-based songs lindsey would want to put on her album, but i'd never actually tested the room to see what it sounded like. so, i decided to take an hour or three and see what a song or two of mine sounded like in there, sung from different parts of the room, sung with the mics shifted around, with the shower curtain open or closed, etc.
by 8pm i had recorded 14 songs.
so, i thought it would be fitting to post them online as a soundcloud session before i disappear into the abyss for three weeks. there aren't any new songs here (i'm mostly working on poems right now, and usually those flesh out into songs eventually, but none have yet), but there are a lot of new covers. here's the whole setlist:

MIXTAPE: yankee hotel foxtrot demos compilation
okay, so i know i promised a new mixtape this week. and i got piled on by work and lack of sleep and i haven't listened to anything new or started piecing tracks together. but one thing i did do was dig into the demo sessions for wilco's yankee hotel foxtrot for the umpteenth time. for some reason, though, this was the first time it really struck me that within the two or three readily available sessions from the recording of the album, there are nine songs that ended up on the cutting room floor. not only is this an album-length number of songs in and of itself, but the quality of the songs all the way around are good enough that, though they might not stand up to the version of YHF that we actually got, they make a solid "album" on their own.
so i figured i'd pick what i thought was the best version of each of these tracks, put them in the order most beseeming a cohesive album, and upload them. this collection actually includes a few of my all-time favorite wilco tracks: "cars can't escape" and "venus stop the train". i also really, really like "not for the season" and "magazine called sunset". to my ears, a lot of these songs actually strike a better balance between pop sensibility and sonic experimentation than the tracks that actually comprise YHF do, which is funny since that's what that album is known for. then there's "venus stop the train", which just stomps on your guts at the end. i included an alternate version of "alone" as a bonus track just because there are three or four versions, and while the one i included earlier in the playlist is most reminiscent of that YHF sound, the other version is also pretty great.
if you're a fan of YHF and haven't heard any of these demos before, i highly recommend getting both sets of demos (one is a 21-track set and i believe the other is an 18-track set). a lot of the tracks that actually ended up on the album are on these demos in multiple incarnations and some are pretty incredibly different ("poor places" comes to mind).
note: the reason i'm making an exception to my usual rule here and uploading more than one song by an artist is because i've seen the sessions these songs are pulled from all over the place online, including a few very well-known wilco trading sites. so i'm assuming this is kosher. if it's not, of course let me know and i'll remove the link to the files right away.

it's christmas time, bitches!
so, i have a new grain of sand to add to the beach of shameful pop culture admissions i've made on this blog throughout the years. every year i listen to a shitload of new christmas albums in the hope of finding sparkles of brilliance. sure, christmas is a huge, mean, nasty, soulless commercial enterprise, but we all have those warm, fuzzy moments of one christmas or another, either as a child or an adult, or else we wouldn't spend years and money and travel thousands of miles at the most dangerous travelling time of the year every year in hopes of resurrecting those warm, fuzzy moments. right? RIGHT?!
well, most of my warm, fuzzy moments involve christmas music, whether it was the listening to, or the caroling of. and even in the 21st century, sometimes hundreds of years after many of these songs were made, occasionally a version of an old song or even more rarely a completely new christmas song ("all i want for christmas is you", anyone?) comes along that is actually worth listening to. besides, i need something to prop up the leaning tower of my sanity come the end of fall semester each year, and what better way than to listen to a shitload of relaxing christmas music?
so this year, i've listened once again to a decent amount (yes, including bob dylan's christmas album, but i'm not ready emotionally to talk about that yet). not as much as i usually do, but that's okay because early in my survey, i've discovered what is undoubtedly 2009's christmas music masterpiece.

sure, it's christmas tunes rendered as if through a midi synthesizer or an old NES sound chip, but there are tons of brilliant little moments in here that deserve discovery. this wasn't just thrown together as a sheer gimmick; each song shows a lot of interesting touches and more brilliant little details come out with each listen. check out "god rest ye merry gentlemen" if nothing else. it's ridiculously cool (note for young people: the voice isn't auto-tuned, now get off my lawn!).

pink elephant sessions
i mixed these as well as i could. which is to say that they don't sound that good, but they don't sound that bad, either.
back in february, i set aside a weekend to record a few as-yet-unrecorded songs for a friend's benefit CD. she wanted a song or two. so of course i recorded fourteen. because that's how i roll.
there aren't really any completely new songs on here, per se, though "insomnia song", a song i originally recorded for a movie a few friends and i were making last fall (the movie never got made, due to grad school) is new but doesn't have lyrics. just crickets.
there is also a persistent odd pinging throughout a few of these recordings, a problem i fixed eventually but couldn't completely edit out of these particular tracks.
so if you're interested in hearing yet another version of some of these songs, download this...though i still think the winter '08 show is probably my best recording, this has a few moments of good-ness. here's the official tracklist file:

everything's fixed and good and magical. now then.
so, i've decided to officialize my discography thus far, partly as an exercise in putting all my eggs in one basket, and partly in preparation for attempting to move on to some new and potentially exciting things...my hope is that in some weird, OCD way, consolidating all of this stuff together will make it easier to stop sort of tinkering around with it in lieu of actually writing and thinking and playing and singing new things. this is step one of three in the process...though i suppose the hypothetical step four would be me actually writing new stuff. expect steps two and three in the reasonably near future (hopefully by the end of next weekend, but right now i'm not holding my breath). soon.
anyway, i'm making available again via bittorrent (and for a limited time once they're uploaded, on sendspace for those of you who don't use bittorrent) my entire discography.
you can go here RIGHT NOW to get any of this stuff via torrent. the sendspace uploads are also ready, finally.
i'll also be emailing people who i think might be interested in this directly, so some of you might get double-messaged. sorry. but i'm excited. perhaps most exciting of all, you'll notice the new recording i made with andrea over break up for the first time. this came out really really well so download it. she's got a new album coming up soon and she's fucking badass and a much better performer than me and an inspiring musician. so make with the clicky.

2. you can convert these files from .flac to .wav or .mp3 using a program called "trader's little helper", which you can get by typing that into google.
3. if you really, really want this in a different format and you really, really have no idea how to make that happen, let me know. i have the file-converting equivalent of a swiss army knife on my computer(s) and can probably get you whatever you want. i prefer .flac because it's small and lossless, but i realize that some people might have trouble playing it.

so, after a few months of hiatus from making mixtapes (well, i've made a few for some individuals, but not one for the blog), i'm posting one i made based off of the albums i took home over break. i only took 19 CDs with me as a sort of experiment, since i'm notorious for taking 75-100 albums with me on trips of 2-3 weeks and then never listening to any of them. fortunately, taking one track apiece off of 19 albums makes a nice mixtape. well, sort of. this one was a little difficult to make coherent due to my strict self-inflicted rules. anyway, here it is, and with any luck i'll be back to normal mixtapes at the end of this month...

alas, i am not actually emoting or cutting myself...i'm just celebrating the release of cardinology, which i'm going to try to fucking buy from hastings tonight and possibly go insane with rage when they don't have it/aren't open. INSANE WITH RAAAAGE.
anyway, it's a win-win deal for you because i'm putting up two old RA tracks from the infamous foley's cellar show...which as i'm sure i've mentioned before was the show that simultaneously got me interested in RA and collecting live music. and without both of those hobbies i would likely work even more than i do now. which would be very, very bad for me.
i was listening to suicide handbook on the way to work today and these two tracks in particular stood out. have to go back to conference-land now. sushi tonight. mmmm...

judy turns it up to 10
just grabbed the new RA 10-23-2006 soundboard. i haven't listened to all of it yet, but it looks to be (as one of the final shows in the fabled '06 UK tour) a logical endpoint for all of the absolutely insane jamming and bizarre improvisation that characterized what was probably my favorite tour by any band, ever.
for one, the first set is 20 songs, all run together, without as much as a pause to change guitars. for another, there are at least 4 songs on the setlist that had never been played before and never got played again. why haven't i listened to this yet? because avery hall owns my soul and i have to ask it to be allowed to go out alone at night.
anyway, one of my favorite, flat-out fun rock songs that emerged during this tour was "judy garland", and i've pretty obsessively (surprise!) collected every version ever recorded...and this one is way better than any of those previous ones. notice, for example, the quick seconds-long disco beat breaks that the band lays down during the chorus; something they don't do normally during this song, but just saw fit to throw out there during this performance. it's details like that that make these guys special.

a'ight (i forget if i usually apostrophize that shit or not). after three months of mixtape miasma, i've thrown together two CDs worth of shit from the last month and a half or so. i had a hard time wading through all the songs i wanted to use, so i ended making two mixtapes, each with pretty much the same artist lineup, but different tracks.

rift
i always listen to music on the way to work. for years (and sometimes i still) i have derided the people in our culture who are super-connected to their audio devices - first CD players, now iPods and iPhones and all the derivatives of those that are available - for willfully maligning the real world...for not wanting to engage, for shutting themselves off and immersing instead in yet another selfish pursuit in an already intensely (and psychopathically) selfish and individualistic society. i'm not a hypocrite (for once) for this. i didn't listen to music at all on walks for the first six months that i worked here. i took every possible different (but timely) route to work, noted all the details, took pictures and pretty much absorbed everything. but also in that six months i never once ran into anyone i knew on those walks, never ran into anyone who seemed interested in talking...and after so long even an interesting landscape becomes pretty unchanging.
so i started listening to music. i bought a walkman (my first and only ever, my little blue shoulder-bag buddy) and some rechargeable batteries (which are actually on their way into senility finally after three years of hardcore abuse). because of all the music i write, though 117 percent of listening to music is pleasure for me, a 36 or so percent is also studying, so this was actually in a way "work" time on my walk to and from work. i couldn't walk and read, i couldn't walk and plan my seminar responses or my lesson plan for composition at the same time. but i could study music but just listening while i walked. so that's what i did.
i listen to a lot of mixes, a lot of live music, a lot of internet radio a lot of streams of radio shows...but not a lot of albums. despite the fact that i have about 500 albums, i don't really listen to any of them much. the walkman forced me too. it can't connect to the internet, and even the best soundboard recording doesn't carry well over a walkman > shitty earbuds connection (too much treble, not enough volume; it can be listenable if you remix the show specifically for walkman/headphones, but it's never worth it...the same shows sound incredible on my 5.1 speakers at home or even on my laptop sometimes). so i was "stuck" with albums. it was good; it got me thinking about a lot of things i wouldn't be thinking of otherwise. it also built up something like 900 days' worth of album-listening. which means pretty much everything i put on nowadays i've heard at least once. the newness is gone. but, because my listening selection for any day is pretty much random, i'm still always a little surprised. like today when i pulled out phish's rift. occasionally this happens, grabbing a very seminal album (for me) at random. it's cool. rift is an album that i can listen to and honestly say that had i never heard it i would be a completely different type of music fan, musician, etc. it was a turning point for me. and so being at the point now where i have every note memorized but can still remember the significance of those notes the first time i heard them is sort of like dating someone for five years and then seeing that smile that still flashes you back to how fucking nervous you were the first time you saw it and realized how beautiful it was and the kinds of crazy shit it was going to likely cause you to do.
rift, along with round room is the phish album that most clearly communicates the broad spectrum of phish's ability as a group of musicians, as well as succeeding in putting a reasonable facsimile of their live sound in the studio. at times it's frenetic ("rift", "maze"), at times dreamy anastasio/marshall-style jazz ("fast enough for you"), wacky and multi-layered ("sparkle", "weigh"), sprawling ("horn", "it's ice"), and so on. there's a little of everything, and while some phish albums like picture of nectar and billy breathes might be more accessible at times, this is the first phish album (chronologically) that really shows all of the band's different faces. it's more a primer than an introduction. it's not meant to make your comfortable, it's meant to say "here's what to expect if you care to hear more". and it's great.
i've been listening to orchestral and classical music since i was about seven, and so "horn" was actually the first song that took hold of me from this album. it starts out normal-phish-y enough, but then leads into a reall sparse but effective, atmospheric trey solo that then turns into an instrumental that sounds more like a "piece of music" than a "jam". "rift" is also an easy sell. the first track off of the album, it's constantly soaring, has suitably mythological lyrics, and page's piano playing (the main reason i got into the band in the first place, actually) is top notch.
some of the stuff in the later parts of the album gets a little weird if you're not used to phish yet (like "all things reconsidered", their take on the npr show "all things considered"'s theme music), but again, it's representative of what to expect from this band. also, "mound", with its multi-voice chorus and out-of-context blues intro is, in my opinion, one of the most structurally interesting pieces of music the band has ever come up with.
anyway, it's a great album and changed the way i think about music. gigantically. i was already on the verge of losing respect for cookie-cutter music and artists that refuse to take chances before i heard this album back in 2002, and once i did, i threw out my radio (okay, not literally).

size-efficient sendspace'd sounds
i uploaded all of these last night for a friend of mine, and it occurred to me just now that i might as well post the links for you all. they are webcast audio stream rips from a number of festival shows from two weeks ago: the raconteurs, radiohead and wilco from lollapalooza, and she & him from newport.
the sound is surprisingly good for radio streams. the source for each recording is, of course soundboard rather than AUD, which helps, but considering the stream was probably a fairly low bitrate, they sound good even compared to a lot of lossless SBD masters that i've heard.
they're all in high-quality mp3, too, which should please a few of you who have issues with me always uploading everything in .flac :)
the wilco and raconteurs recordings are really clean, and you can pretty much barely ever tell that they're streamed recordings. the she & him recording has some skipping/buffering noise pretty constantly from about 1/3rd to 2/3rds of the way through, but it's definitely listenable regardless. the radiohead sounds good, but the bass is really high in the mix and sometimes fuzzes out, especially during the last few songs ("idioteque" comes to mind).
anyway, get all four of them. they're quick downloads (all under 200mb), and great shows. the racs' show especially melted my ears a little. i also liked hearing zooey with a band (m.ward included, of course).
