by which i mean the next few weeks.

the only thing that ever made people read this blog in the first place (the mixtapes) will resume shortly.  i didn't actually get anything written today, as i spent most of the day figuring out how to wrap up my 110 course (i really want to get back in the swing of writing, but i figure that not getting fired for just not teaching my class is more important).  but.  i have been listening to a lot of new good (the new mike doughty) and bad (phoenix) music.  and a lot of that has ended up in a huge fucking folder called "mix" out of which i hope to develop a few new mixes.  so keep your eyes peeled (and if you are an insect or something that doesn't have eyelids, just take my suggestion figuratively, and keep looking at this blog).

MIXTAPE: yankee hotel foxtrot demos compilation

okay, so i know i promised a new mixtape this week.  and i got piled on by work and lack of sleep and i haven't listened to anything new or started piecing tracks together.  but one thing i did do was dig into the demo sessions for wilco's yankee hotel foxtrot for the umpteenth time.  for some reason, though, this was the first time it really struck me that within the two or three readily available sessions from the recording of the album, there are nine songs that ended up on the cutting room floor.  not only is this an album-length number of songs in and of itself, but the quality of the songs all the way around are good enough that, though they might not stand up to the version of YHF that we actually got, they make a solid "album" on their own.

so i figured i'd pick what i thought was the best version of each of these tracks, put them in the order most beseeming a cohesive album, and upload them.  this collection actually includes a few of my all-time favorite wilco tracks: "cars can't escape" and "venus stop the train".  i also really, really like "not for the season" and "magazine called sunset".  to my ears, a lot of these songs actually strike a better balance between pop sensibility and sonic experimentation than the tracks that actually comprise YHF do, which is funny since that's what that album is known for.  then there's "venus stop the train", which just stomps on your guts at the end.  i included an alternate version of "alone" as a bonus track just because there are three or four versions, and while the one i included earlier in the playlist is most reminiscent of that YHF sound, the other version is also pretty great.

if you're a fan of YHF and haven't heard any of these demos before, i highly recommend getting both sets of demos (one is a 21-track set and i believe the other is an 18-track set).  a lot of the tracks that actually ended up on the album are on these demos in multiple incarnations and some are pretty incredibly different ("poor places" comes to mind).

note: the reason i'm making an exception to my usual rule here and uploading more than one song by an artist is because i've seen the sessions these songs are pulled from all over the place online, including a few very well-known wilco trading sites.  so i'm assuming this is kosher.  if it's not, of course let me know and i'll remove the link to the files right away.

lack of mixtapes makes baby jesus cry

sorry about the lack of mixtapes lately. i'm not doing it intentionally (even though i hate all of you secretly and would potentially passively aggressively express said hatred by withholding mixtapes). i just didn't have any time at the end of november, and throughout january i've been listening to a lot of wilco bootlegs and the entirety of the LOTR complete recordings and those two 12-disc phish box sets. i didn't really feel like making a mixtape that was entirely wilco or howard shore would be especially interesting (or legal, for that matter).

i was working for awhile on a mixtape for a certain girl and then i realized that was so sixth grade and quit. now i'm going to put one together from the daytrotter sessions i've been listening to lately. they're awesome.

xmix 2008

so, after a few months of hiatus from making mixtapes (well, i've made a few for some individuals, but not one for the blog), i'm posting one i made based off of the albums i took home over break. i only took 19 CDs with me as a sort of experiment, since i'm notorious for taking 75-100 albums with me on trips of 2-3 weeks and then never listening to any of them. fortunately, taking one track apiece off of 19 albums makes a nice mixtape. well, sort of. this one was a little difficult to make coherent due to my strict self-inflicted rules. anyway, here it is, and with any luck i'll be back to normal mixtapes at the end of this month...

MIXTAPE - Trey Band NYE 2006

here's the mix of the trey band shows that i mentioned. i know there are 2 or 3 of you guys out there that are fans, so hopefully you'll enjoy this. and if not, well, it was fun to put together and now it's on my computer forever.

like i mentioned earlier, some of the breaks between songs are weird because i didn't do any editing or normalizing. but mostly these are really good quality audience recordings.

also, disc 1 might not actually fit on a disc if anyone tries to burn it, depending on your software/hardware and your CD-R type. so be careful. because if you overburn a disc, flames might shoot out of your computer and consume you. you laugh now...now you are laughing. but we'll see who's laughing when you're DEAD OF FIRE!

MIXTAPE - April Mix, Letter 2

so this is what's left of the april music. it's actually a shitload of music that i listened to on my drive to and from the selway, plus a few tracks from a few albums i've been listening to obsessively in the last few weeks (The Black Keys' "Rubber Factory", The National's "Boxer", Dylan's "Modern Times", and M.Ward's "Transistor Radio"). because of that whole "listen to 18 hours of trey band" thing that i did when grading portfolios, i didn't get through as much new music as i would have liked.

this tape has some pretty cool songs on it, but a lot of them are stolen from various world music CDs and artists that i really like, and so i had a hard time reconciling some of that with, say, dylan. so basically if you listen and pretend there isn't supposed to be any coherency between songs you'll be happy. i tagged a Flight of the Conchords song on as a bonus track because i've been wearing that CD out lately, but it didn't really seem to fit with everything else.

MIXTAPE - April 2008 (number A)

alright. i'm putting up the april mixtape early for a number of reasons [enumerate]:

1. i'm going to be gone in the woods most of next week

2. i've already listened to shitloads of music this month and there's still a week left

3. when portfolios come in next week, i'm going to log about 40-50 more hours of music listening

portfolio week is important, musically. with all that work to do, it's absolutely imperative to choose good music while the work is being done. so I'm working on that now, but it's a safe bet that by the end of april i'll have a second mixtape put together. i'm also really getting into trey anastasio band again, and so part of the week i'm planning to go back and listen to the new year's run from 2006 and making a compilation out of the best tracks from that run. but i've also got a lot of other new albums lined up and i've been trying to listen to a lot of cardinals shows from the 2005 tour (it's so nice to not currently have any of my favorite bands on tour; i can catch up on all these old recordings i just burned and moved on when i first got them). so expect some more uploads when i get back from the selway.

so here's the tracklist of the first mix, anyway. it's a little heavy on a few artists (m.ward stuff, trey stuff, ryan adams stuff, jack white stuff) but i think it's still good. actually, on second listen i think it's REAL good. download it!

i'm including two bonus tracks, also, because i'm indecisive. the actual "CD" runs about 80 minutes and three seconds, so if you try to actually burn it, you'll have to take out a few of the between-song pauses to make it fit. the two bonus tracks are "flock of words" by trey anastasio, because i love the song despite its cheesiness and there an AWESOME flute-funk-elevator-music solo in the middle that's worth the download in and of itself, and "dead people unite and take over" by werewolph...if that title doesn't make you download it by itself, you don't have a soul. MIXTAPE - March 2008

so i finally cooked up something for a mixtape from march. there were so many freaking songs i wanted to put on here that paring things down from about 45 songs to something that would fit on a disc was a chore in and of itself, but then making everything flow nicely between the eighteen hundred genres that are represented was even more difficult and not something i'm sure i succeeded at after numerous attempts. the first half of this thing hangs together well, but from radiohead on it's a little dicey. but i like it. maybe you will as well.

legal stuff

just to make sure i'm not stepping on anybody's toes what with the posting of mixtapes and such:

i post said mixtapes under the assumption that i'm merely doing what fans of music have been doing since the cassette-tape age (which i'm old enough to remember). namely, i'm taking a bunch of songs i like, slapping them together, and passing them on to friends so they can enjoy them too. this is complicated a bit by the fact that in this case, my "friends" are anybody who likes music and is reading this blog on the internet.

i don't have a large readership, and at this point, the few people who do read this blog are friends who i communicate directly with on a regular basis; if i was getting 10,000 hits a day i feel like things might be different.

however, they aren't, and i feel the original spirit of the idea of making a semi-personal mixtape remains intact. in some cases, i'll also be reviewing an album and occasionally attaching one mp3 from that album to give people a sample of what i'm talking about. this i see as promoting the music and purchase of said music and the assorted trappings of that whole business.

if i am wrong about either of these things, and you perceive either as being an infringement in any way, don't hesitate to contact me at locke456@gmail.com and i'll take the offending content down immediately. i will never upload entire albums or significant bodies of work by one band or artist, and all links are purposely made to expire after a few days rather than to be permanent sources from which to acquire said music, also in the interest of preserving the "mixtape mentality".

MIXTAPE - May 2007

as noted in the previous mixtape post, may 2007 was a strange time. partly because of this and partly in spite of it (i like to paradoxically refer to my past reasoning because of some learned writer's behavior that makes me feel like i'm saying something profound) i was playing a lot of music and listening to a lot of music. i made a mix for a friend of mine shortly after returning to ohio (and dealing with the loss of my identity somewhere just south of the Canton-Akron airport on I-77, but that's another story) that was comprised half of songs that i was playing a lot at the time (other people's songs, not mine) and half of songs that were just really hitting me hard when i was listening to them.

i figured i'd throw this up on the ol' blog because i just rediscovered it on my hard drive and thought more people should enjoy it. the first half are the songs i was playing, and the second half were the listen-y ones. everything should be tagged correctly, but let me know if there's any trouble...it uploaded extremely fast and that makes me a little nervous that maybe something was lost in translation.

i hate that i can't use that idiom anymore without thinking of bill murray. i sort of wish he would have ended up stranded in time with andie mcdowell.

i'm scrounging (as i attempt to rid my harddrive of almost 40 gigs of new live shows) through my old cd wallets, trying to make space and i found some absolutely great old-school road-trip mixes (one featuring prominently outkast's "hey ya") that i might put up in the coming weeks if i actually have some free time. i'm not slacking on the new mixes though...i'm putting together tracks for this month and should actually have something decent by the end of the month.

MIXTAPE - Really Shitty Pizza Movie Soundtrack (2.0)

way back in the spring of 2007, i had just finished my master's degree and was floating in the resultant pointlessness of my life. i had decided to go back to ohio and see what i could scrounge up there in terms of a life while i waited for a year to go by so i could get back into grad school. i only had a compact japanese car and no money for a u-haul, so a few friends and i threw together a sort of haphazard plan that involved them coming out to pullman via airplane and renting a van that would form the second half of our caravan all the way back to ohio - over the course of 4 days we'd cover over 2000 miles and sleep on top of a mountain in colorado as well as some really STD-infested hotels.

on the morning we were going to leave pullman (and i thought i was leaving pullman for absolutely ever), i threw together a mix CD of songs picked largely from a huge crop of 80s tunes that my friend sarah had given me, proclaiming this to be the "Shitty Pizza Movie Soundtrack", referencing a conversation we'd all had the night before over shitty downtown pullman pizza about how we needed to just make a shitty movie about five guys hanging out in pullman eating shitty pizza. this CD ended up sort of being the soundtrack to the ensuing roadtrip, and i thought since i was too lazy to come up with a new february mixtape last month that this would fill the gap nicely. a lot of these songs are just really fun songs. it's worth downloading just for the bridge in "Rosanna" if you've never heard it before. but there are some pretty epic road-trip-camaraderie ballads (simple minds, don henley, journey) and of course who can resist peter gabriel's "In Your Eyes", for when you're standing on the balcony of the roach-infested hotel at 5am smoking a cigarette and watching the sunrise, thinking about that girl that it just didn't work out with? NO ONE CAN. that's why you should listen. here's the tracklist:

in the interest of adding some structure to this blog, and also to make it generally clear to casual readers which entries are nerdy video game posts, which are journal samples, and which are other things, i've started labelling everything that's not just random thoughts. so if you see a post without an all-caps title, it's probably random. otherwise, you should already know what you've gotten yourself into.

so, here's another new thing i want to start doing. getting back to making mixtapes, writing occasional reviews, and making best-of music lists. not because i think my opinion is really well informed or matters, but just because it's fun. so here's my first mixtape, made entirely from albums i played on my way to and from salem and seattle this past weekend. i listened to a lot of not-ryan adams stuff (believe it or not), but then when i sat down to arrange a bunch of the tracks it i realized that the selection sort of precluded a neat song flow. so i basically split the tracklist into two halves, with more electronica-oriented songs for the first half, and the more standard, rocky-type tunes on the second half. i only included one cardinals song, and it's a cover anyway (you're welcome), and i put my favorite dylan track from "time out of mind" at the end as a sort of coda because, let's face it, it's really better than all the other songs on the tracklist combined.
