there's just something about this song, even amid all the spaced-out jams and folksy awesomeness of the more complex songs that make up the bulk of cold roses. brad starting off with the huge bass drum thump (though he comes in a bit late on this video), and then the rest of the song is just a loose two or three minutes of bar room rock. it's also about my favorite song ever, lyrics-wise, for portraying that feeling of being miserable because of a girl, and then drinking as a result, and then being miserable from drinking and wanting to kick yourself in the balls as hard as you can. and then, perhaps, amazingly, doing that.
i might well have already posted this video. i'm sorry if i did, but it's the best version on youtube. clickety here (no embedding).
here's a VBR mp3 of a very different version from the 5-14-05 show in buffalo, ny (my first ryan show, and one of the first performances ever of the song). you can definitely hear the difference in j.p.'s guitar playing vs. neal's, not to mention the fact that ryan is playing that heavy distortion, ear-slaying gibson he used to play on everything back then. the little jam at the beginning is killer.
