this show kicked the previous night's ass very, very hard. i am pleased. the "mr. completely" opener kept the song's usual intensity, but ended it fittingly about about nine minutes instead of turning it into a 20 minute monster. the explosion caused by the opener contined into "sand" - one of my favorite trey band/phish songs. this version was good, and very high-energy, but i didn't like it as much as some other versions i've heard. the second-night "shine" was much better and tighter than the first, "last tube" was better and funkier (with more cyro) than the first night, and then "what's done" finds trey in his first full-on guitar god moment of the run, shredding the shit out of the middle of the song for a good three minutes or so...this whole first set was awesome. "mozambique" wouldn't have suffered by being a bit shorter, but it was still solid...you can hear the crowd's shock/delight when "alumni blues" starts up, and it doesn't disappoint. not a huge fan of "mud city" this time around either. i don't know what it is about that song.
the "simple twist up dave" from night two has a great jam in the middle, but alas, the version i have picks up about two minutes after the song starts, and so i didn't get the whole song, just the jam, mostly. "low" is long, wandering, "who"-esque. a solid version, for sure, but when they keep stretching this song out to 15 minutes, sometimes you feel like you're hearing the same thing over and over again instead of a progression of ideas, which is essential to jam music not just being "the same chord over and over for 20 minutes" like so many people already mistakenly stereotype it as. i like "low" a lot, but i'm not sure what they're trying to do with it here. the "money, love and change" > "sex machine" > etc. sandwich is really fun-sounding, but seems like one of those moments that you really had to be there to enjoy. on record, it just sounds like a fun jam that lasts about 20 minutes and leaves you just sort of feeling like you're listening to background music. "push on..." is very solid, probably a better version even than the previous night. cyro really lends a lot to this song too. "bar 17" is a song that i never really have understood live. the studio version is amazing, but it's a composition to me, not a jam piece. the band plays it for about 18 minutes, but it never seems to go anywhere and seems to be wandering, looking for a reason to keep going after the first few minutes. fortunately, the set ends with an excellent, high-energy "cincinnati" > "tuesday". the encore continues on this trend, with fast, electric versions of some of the poppier songs off of "shine", ending with a particularly great "come as melody". if you can stomach (or even enjoy) the "shine" songs, this part of the show is great. if you're one of those people who rolls your eyes everytime you hear one of these songs start up, you'll likely just be bored. but i think it's a good closing sequence to a show that's far and away better than the first night.
