so i decided that while i sat around yesterday all day and wallowed in the sudden (temporary) pointlessness of my life, i was going to attempt a bit of tough love/self-improvement by not blogging all day and not smoking all day. i did both of those things, and am doing one of the two again today. if you can't figure out which one, well, then there's just no hope for you at all. i'm sorry.
i'm trying to keep busy, keep my mind off of how quiet it is. i brought my laptop home so i can do some movie editing. i still have to take down the damn tent that's been airing in my living room for almost 2 weeks now (a testament to the insanity that was final grading). i have lots and lots of other little detailed things to take care of, but largely i have a huge gaping hole from here to the 30th. sounds like moe might be interested in coming out here to help me move/drink all the alcohol in town in july when i come back out. i'm really excited about that. really excited about digging into classes and material that i'm actually pre-invested in, and not invested in just because i need them for my degree and because knowing things is fun. i went back to my office today and rounded up all the xerox article copies from the 3-4 classes i had as an MA that sort of parallel what i want to start studying next year. i'd like to read them all over the summer and take some detailed notes so i have some sort of foothold coming in. i've also got those writer's groups starting soon...so that means i should probably get some new, not-full, not-pink notebooks.
someone finally posted the SBD recording of the cardinals' show from seattle. it sounds great. not as great as being there, of course...
i'm excited about all this writing/thinking...however, it seems like the music thing is probably going to get a little sidetracked with all this other stuff going on. i want to start gigging regularly starting this summer (with acoustic and harmonicas only, because nothing else will fit on the plane, obviously) and then do the same here in the fall...and honestly, i have enough songs and a good enough setlist to do that already. i have lots of ideas for new songs, new riffs, etc. but i no longer feel this crazy urge to write an album's worth of material every six months as i have for the last two years. the thing is, it's fucking hard to do that in the sense that you have to write 13-15 cohesive tracks and then sit down and record them all in a sub-standard studio environment and come up with a product that you're not embarrassed to show people and say "this is a record". i haven't been able to do that since almost two years ago now. it's not that i'm not writing the songs, it's just that i'd much rather write whatever the fuck i want and play it for people than try to compose things an album at a time. it's like back when i wrote fiction a lot and could never actually finish anything because i only thought in terms of entire books. if i take it one step a time like i do with pretty much everything else, it'll be more fun and also likely more productive. it's always the stuff i care about the most that i'm most obsessed with defining and quantifying. that's why i'm bad with the ladies. well that thing where my left eye random shoots a deadly laser blast straight ahead during awkward conversations doesn't help either.
i got the entire samurai champloo set the other day, so now i have something to keep me going in the small hours when i'm too tired to actually learn or do anything new but not tired enough to sleep.
oh yeah, so i've been off of work a whole 2 days. already i've started sleeping from about 9am to 2pm. blech.
lots of other stuff i was going to say, but it has escaped me.
this wasn't meant to be a "look at the cool stuff i'm doing!" post. i'm just trying to convince myself. it's sort of working.
