i spent most of the weekend at moro because of construction on avery hall. i was holed up in the corner (the corner opposite my usual corner) about twelve hours a day, working on a piece for (hopeful) publication instead of doing all of the reading i should have been doing. i tried working all that in last night, but my brain gave out and i ended up chatting online with a few people until odd hours of the night. it's amazing to me sometimes how long my brain will chase its own tail. even in the face of apocalyptic levels of sleep deprivation.
i met a homeless guy out on the patio sunday night, while i was taking a smoke break. we chatted for a bit, i tried to explain to him that having a Master's degree doesn't really get you a teaching job if you want to teach college, he tried to explain to me that being homeless makes it hard for you to keep track of your kids. it was getting cold (it was 9pm or so) and i pointed him in the direction of a few abandoned train cars i was pretty sure had some old blankets in them. i guess urban exploration is good for something. apparently he had just come over from seattle. talk about your unfathomable decisions.
i didn't bring enough food or money for food today. i can already tell it's going to be one of those days where, in addition to being half-awake and emotionally nonfunctional all day long, i'll be nursing that constant sort of gnawing sensation that says not only "you're hungry" but "you haven't been eating enough pretty constantly for a very long time". i hate that feeling. i'm failing, on some basic level, to keep myself at a healthy level of...something.
the weekend was really fun. okay, well saturday and sunday were mostly work, but i enjoy writing and so working on the piece was pretty fun. besides, it was nice to have an excuse to stay off campus. to hang out at moro, and sort of feel like it was early august all over again. like life made at least some semblance of sense. friday was excellent. made myself stop working at 5pm and spent the evening and eventually late night with a few friends. i would definitely do that again this weekend, but with papers coming in and a presentation coming up next tuesday, not to mention the fact that my life is starting to show those signs of fraying at the edges (filthy apartment, not many clean clothes in the dresser, dirty dishes piling up in the sink). i think it's going to be a putting-my-life-back-together weekend. and those are never fun.
maybe i'll get some sleep tonight.
we've discussed how sleep is overrated, but i'm starting to see the benefits from it. at least in others. they seem much happier when they get sleep. i might try it.
ReplyDeleteand you're weekend was far from wasted. the piece you worked on is really good :0
