i have feelings about tv themes!

i thought i would share them with you.

so, i've noticed a potentially odd trend. though, considering my obsession with music in all shapes, sizes (?) and forms, maybe it's not so weird.

i have a tendency to have violent emotional reactions/intense memory recalls as a result of certain songs. it's a side effect of paying tons of attention to both my own life and music. but i've also noticed that i have a tendency of have violent etc. etc. to certain television themes. which is weird. i know. but, because of the way i watch TV, which generally involves me watching entire seasons of shows over a period of a week or two at a time, my TV-series-ingestion is very intense. and oddly, when the rest of my life is intense (which it generally has been for like three years)...well, 2+2 makes 4.

so here's the breakdown:

"24" doesn't so much have a theme, but the opening sequence is always still really evocative of the first semester is spent alone in my old apartment after my ex-girlfriend moved out. i watched insane amounts of this show over that semester, including 2 whole seasons i'd never seen before. this brings back memories of sitting on my really uncomfortable rug in the corner of my dingy-ass apartment, eating totino's pizza and wondering what the point of life was beyond jack bauer. eventually i found the answer to that question, but it took a few months.

the theme for "house", which i obsessively watched the fucking hell out of leading up to and following my MA graduation (three seasons in a row) still brings back a lot of memories of that time, which of course involves kind of intense confused and lonely feelings. this is probably the most intense memory-causing of all my memory-causing TV themes.

"dexter"'s AMAZING intro sequence reminds me most of last semester, when i ripped through all three seasons in about five weeks. in addition to the show itself being insanely intense, my semester was crazy...and though (unlike the above two themes) i don't associate the dexter theme with being lonely, i DO associate it with a strange sort of relief. as in, the time of the day i was watching dexter was the only time of the day when i wasn't working, and i finally had enough going on socially in my life that i actually appreciated being alone for that short time every day instead of being afraid of it.

now i'm plunging crazily into "the office", and my response to it is similar to, though more intense than my reaction to "dexter". i still have my "TV time" each night before sleeping (though i sometimes read, write, record, etc. instead if the mood strikes), and now it's just become a way of winding down after a crazy day. "the office" theme just makes me think of the freeing feeling of knowing that for at least 22 minutes i don't have worry about work or anything else i worry about...and hell, i might even laugh a lot.

remember the theme from punky brewster? "maybe the world is blind, or just a little unkind...don't know..." that's some deep shit my friend. sigh. and now it's stuck in my head.
