you've got to watch this video. it looks like good ol' RA is taking a cue from jeff tweedy's ridiculously huge gibson hollowbody.
anyway, i just happened upon this video the other day when i was musing about "wharf rat". for me, even after years of listening, the grateful dead's output is generally hit or miss, with a slight advantage to miss. their songs, however, are pretty much all excellently written and conceived, and a lot of the time i'll hear phil and friends or trey or someone do a grateful dead song and it'll click for me, whereas with the original band i just thought it was "meh" at best.
the video itself is from the 2005 jammy awards, and features phil playing with ryan and the then-cardinals (no neal or spacewolf to be found). the song segued into "bird song" after about 12 minutes, but the video cuts off before that. this is probably my favorite grateful dead song, so it's pretty nice to have such a recent video of phil and ryan doing it together. it's also fun as hell to play yourself if you have a fender tube amp in your living room, as i found out this morning.
