(from 6/13):
i always thought that the most profound mark of a relationship or friendship was (at least on some level) the point at which you were comfortable sharing anything and everything, sure that the other person would be willing to listen and to indulge you. now i think there's a level beyond blind acceptance. or more correctly, that blind acceptance doesn't really exist. it's a quality we create and apply to a relationship that we enjoy so much or that is so important to us that we force ourselves to idealize it. nobody is 100% indulgent. so perhaps the real final stage is this: reaching a point with someone where you are willing to tell them everything and anything but because you know they'll either be okay with that or willing to listen to what you have to say OR you respect them enough that you're willing to accept them NOT being okay with it, because you understand and trust that that denial must be based on sound reasoning.
i thought of this the other day because i was talking to a good friend of mine and communicating some pretty heavy stuff, but i wasn't nervous at all about doing so. i assumed at the time it was because said person was perfectly understanding in my eyes, but later realized this wasn't really realistic...instead i just knew that if they didn't want to deal with my problems that i would be able to accept that because i could fully believe that their reasons for turning me down were sound. cool.
