saddled with the loss of their starting QB for the rest of the season, the niners came into st. louis today to face their archrivals-of-death, the rams, for the second time this season.
the won the first matchup in a "burn-barner" or something, 27-24, and won this one in significantly more convincing fashion, 36-29...though until the last few minutes it was 36-14. any concern that the niners were hurt at all by the loss of their 8-million-dollar-a-year QB were pretty much extinguished. in the last 1 1/2 games akili smith has gone 29 for 35 for 422 yards and 4 touchdowns, three of which happened today and were all to raymond scholl. also, bowes picked up 216 yards on the ground, bringing his total to 1711 for the season, setting him up for the possibility of getting 2000 yards in the regular season for the second time in five years.
the offense was pretty much unstoppable but the deal was sealed by 3 st. louis fumbles, two of which were clearly incomplete passes; but st. louis still failed to use their challenges, which set up two niner touchdowns. kurt warner threw for almost 400 yards, but it took him 50 passes to get there, only 22 of which were completed.
three more games left; the first two should be relatively simple, and the last one is against the packers, who are one of only a few teams with records comparable to the niners' 12-2 (interestingly, the saints are 13-1).
